Music Mention: Panic - The Smiths

In the mood today for a super short song by The Smiths.

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play

On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
Provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ

Film Review: Cabin Fever (2002)

Tagline: Invisible. Silent. Deadly.

Plot: A group of five college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of homicidal locals.

Genre: Horror | Thriller

Director: Eli Roth

Actors: Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, James Debello

My Review: Very Good! I don't know why I have taken this long to watch this 2002 movie! Seriously!!! I may be the only one who actually enjoyed Hostel I and II directed by Eli Roth and so I knew after watching those movies I would probably like Cabin Fever. And remember Shawn (Rider Strong) from that TV show Boy Meets World? Well, he stars in this movie and even though he starts off as this sappy, wussy guy in the beginning, he kicks ass and mans up and is pretty bad-ass when events starts taking its turn for the worse for him and his friends. Impressed.

Para Rebeca

Para Rebeca

Yesterday's lunch

Worthy mention because it was very good. My phone cam does no justice, but the special of the day was grilled filet mignon, shrimp scampi (on the side), roasted vegetables and corn souffle (soooo good!). Not sure what the sauce was but there was a nice wine flavor to it and the veggies were seasoned to perfection and grilled in butter. Yum.

Celebrity Mention: Dennis Hopper receives star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The ailing Dennis Hopper received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. Although he is famously known for the film 'Easy Rider', I have to say I absolutely LOVED him in David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet'. I firmly believe no other actor could have pulled off that role (and totally creep me out) the way Dennis Hopper did. Oh yeah, I also did enjoy him as the mad bomber in one of my guilty pleasure can't-believe-i'm-admitting-movie, Speed with another guilty pleasure can't-believe-i'm-admitting favorite film couple, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.

Purchase of the Day: National Arrowroot Biscuits

Wow, I haven't blogged in over a month and when I do, the purchase of Nabisco's National Arrowroot Biscuits (yes, for babies, but I absolutely LOVE to snack on them) compels me to write about it.

I haven't been able to find these anywhere (tried Wal Mart, K-Mart, Target, local grocery stores) and no, Gerber Arrowroot is no substitution for the Nabisco ones.

Anyway, I found a 6-pack box on Amazon for $12.50! That sure beats the $5-$7 per 2 pack box (!!!) other online stores were selling it for. I remember a box would go for about $2.50-$3 so I was happy to save and get more on the 6-pack on Amazon. YES!

This is a happy purchase indeed.

Film Review: Dorian Gray (2009)

Tagline: Forever young. Forever cursed.

Plot: A corrupt young man somehow keeps his youthful beauty eternally, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.

Genre: Drama-Thriller

Director: Oliver Parker

Actors: Ben Barnes, Colin Firth, Ben Chaplin

My Review: Very good. Let's see... stars Colin Firth (), Ben Barnes (✓), Ben Chaplin (), and based on Oscar Wilde's novel () - what more could I have asked for? Part disturbing and part creepy at times, this film let's you escape for a moment and realize that you shouldn't let yourself be a pushover or be a follower for approval (hint hint, Dorian Gray). Oh yeah, more importantly, you shouldn't sell your soul to the devil either.

Vyncent Flaw, Guild, Rocksteady Lounge

I'm probably one of the worst bloggers around. So lazy and unmotivated to update. Oh well.

There are huge gaps where I rarely go out and become such a recluse, but there are also those spontaneous moments when I actually do go out and can cram a couple of things in a short time. It takes a lot for me to go out.

Went to see my sister's boyfriend's new band, Vyncent Flaw at The Slidebar in Fullerton recently. Will's (sister's boyfriend) roomie's band, Guild also performed and both were really good and I was really diggin' them. They have 2 more shows lined up this month in L.A. so I'll maybe check it out if things are not so crazy in my schedule.

Oh yeah, my camera is fucked up beyond all repair (FUBAR for those SKYPE users) and really crappy photos ensued. Not only do I really need a new laptop, but now I have to add on another expense for the camera that is completely FUBAR'd.

Vyncent Flaw

Guild

One of my best girlfriends, Nina and her boyfriend, Viktor just had a big night featuring guest DJs from Japan and London over at the Akbar in Silver Lake. It was tons of fun and I had a swell time catching up with friends. They both regularly spin at The Rocksteady Lounge every Mondays at the Akbar.

Some more crappy photos from the FUBAR camera.

Awkward stupid shot of me, but nice photos of Cari and Kristina while dancing.

Film Review: The Proposal (2009)

Director: Anne Fletcher

Actors: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Betty White

My Review: 3 out of 5 stars. I think this particular scene with Betty White and Sandra Bullock is worthy of 5 stars for a LOL moment. This was definitely the funniest part of the movie.

History for the day: Pope recognizes Knights Templar

January 13

1128 : Pope recognizes Knights Templar

On this day in 1128, Pope Honorius II grants a papal sanction to the military order known as the Knights Templar, declaring it to be an army of God.

Led by the Frenchman Hughes de Payens, the Knights Templar organization was founded in 1118. Its self-imposed mission was to protect Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land during the Crusades, the series of military expeditions aimed at defeating Muslims in Palestine. The Templars took their name from the location of their headquarters, at Jerusalem's Temple Mount. For a while, the Templars had only nine members, mostly due to their rigid rules. In addition to having noble birth, the knights were required to take strict vows of poverty, obedience and chastity. In 1127, new promotional efforts convinced many more noblemen to join the order, gradually increasing its size and influence.

While the individual knights were not allowed to own property, there was no such restriction on the organization as a whole, and over the years many rich Christians gave gifts of land and other valuables to support the Knights Templar. By the time the Crusades ended unsuccessfully in the early 14th century, the order had grown extremely wealthy, provoking the jealousy of both religious and secular powers. In 1307, King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V combined to take down the Knights Templar, arresting the grand master, Jacques de Molay, on charges of heresy, sacrilege and Satanism. Under torture, Molay and other leading Templars confessed and were eventually burned at the stake. Clement dissolved the Templars in 1312, assigning their property and monetary assets to a rival order, the Knights Hospitalers. In fact, though, Philip and his English counterpart, King Edward II, claimed most of the wealth after banning the organization from their respective countries.

The modern-day Catholic Church has admitted that the persecution of the Knights Templar was unjustified and claimed that Pope Clement was pressured by secular rulers to dissolve the order. Over the centuries, myths and legends about the Templars have grown, including the belief that they may have discovered holy relics at Temple Mount, including the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant or parts of the cross from Christ's crucifixion. The imagined secrets of the Templars have inspired various books and movies, including the blockbuster novel and film The Da Vinci Code.

Film Review: Duplicity (2009)

Plot Outline: Two spies with a steamy past find themselves on opposites sides of a corporate war.

Director: Tony Gilroy

Actors: Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Tom Wilkinson

Genre: Thriller

My Review: This film sucked. I've attempted to watch this movie three times and could just not sit through it. I thought my first time watching this was because I just wasn't in the mood, but the second (snoozed a bit) and third time (wanted to snooze and just stopped paying attention while using my laptop) validated that I just wasn't into it. I really tried to like it since I am a fan of both Clive Owen and Tom Wilkinson and definitely not Julia Roberts (except for her role in Mystic Pizza!), but the movie just didn't capture my interest long enough to find it even slightly entertaining.
